Thanksgiving 2010

This year, Jeremy, the Madore-ables and I celebrated Thanksgiving with my sister-in-law Jessica, and her fiancee Paul at his house in Orr's Island, Maine. Paul and Jessica really out did themselves by preparing us a fantastic meal for all of us. Amazing job as always you two :)

We had a very relaxing morning and while we were getting things ready, the Madore-ables played with their cousin Mia (who was very nice to share her toys with my girls). We ate, and after dishes were washed dessert was brought out and we listened to Jeremy's younger brothers jam on their guitar and mandolin playing songs for the Madore-ables. I think we sang every verse for Old MacDonald there ever was.

We of course documented our time on the island with photographs. (Would we do it any other way?)

This is Paul's living room...there's a view of the ocean from mostly every window in this house

Paul felt that it was necessary to make sure we left extra plump, so not only did he create the meal, but he also made hors d'oeuvres too.

Five Things Friday

Five Things That Have Made Me Smile In the Last Week:

  1. As some of you may know, yesterday was Thanksgiving :) Jeremy, the Madore-ables and I spent Wednesday and Thursday with my sister-in-law and future brother-in-law at their house in coastal Maine. As always, we had such a great time and of course ate an amazing, fantastic, gourmet dinner. (Thank you again Paul & Jessica!!) I'll post pictures soon.
  2. Jeremy and I have decided that we're going to improve our living situation and make some home improvements. Today, we purchased a flat screen TV that will serve as a TV and a computer screen for processing photos for our photography business. Next project? Framing some photos in time for Sarah's birthday party.
  3. Sarah's speech has improved so much over the last few months. Her latest favorite thing to do is singing songs...specifically Train's "Hey, Soul Sister". Ask her to sing it sometime. She sings the beginning line "Heyyyy. Heyyyyyyyy" brilliantly.
  4. As some of you may know, I'm walking the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer next May and I've started my fundraising early, and I'm running a bottle drive. I returned a whole bunch of 5 cent bottles and cans earlier in the week so I'm up over $5.00 in returnables.
  5. I've gone on a major cleaning spree in our place, and therefore have been able to get rid of a ton of stuff on the best website known to man: Free Cycle. I was able to snag a pair of ice skates for Samantha. WOOT WOOT!

A Thanksgiving "Ditty"

Twas the day of Thanksgiving
And all through the house,

Were the smells of things cooking

And people giving thanks; saying Grace.

The turkey was cooking in the oven with great care

In hopes that the meal would soon be done so all could share.

So now is the time, I think I should say,

HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL and enjoy your day!
Remember to pause and be thankful for the things in your life, no matter how difficult things may be.

Oh The Funny Things Kids Will Say

Over the weekend, Samantha and I went out to run some errands. Before we started our trek, I had to stop at a gas station to fill up my gas tank. When I was all done, I sat back inside the driver's seat and I made a comment that said something like "Boy, Mommy's Jeep was hungry today. I had to fill the gas talk." Samantha and I then had a conversation about gasoline verses diesel and how cars have gasoline and trucks have diesel.

Sam and I continued on our journey and after running to a few stores, I completely forgot about the conversation that Sam and I had at the gas station. So, it was a surprise when Samantha randomly said, "Mommy! Your Jeep must have been hungry!" followed by a few giggles. To which I drew a complete blank and asked Sam to repeat what she had said. Samantha repeated herself and added, "Do cars eat gasoline?". I of course am completely clueless to what she's talking about so I asked Sam again to explain what she means. Sam reminded me of our conversation 20 minutes previous at the gas station and said that my Jeep was hungry and took a lot of gas today. Sam just kept giggling and said on several occasions "NOM NOM NOM" and "Gas is yuck-eeeeeeeee". I laughed out loud...I can only imagine what was running through her head.

Dora: According To Sarah

Hi everybody. This is Sarah. Mommy doesn't know it, but I decided to hack into her blog this morning. I'm sure she'll find out eventually, and I hope she's not too mad at me.

Daddy recently introduced us to a show on t.v that in my opinion is the greatest show ever. Samantha and I really enjoy watching it. It's called Dora the Explorer. If you don't watch it, I can introduce you to the characters so that if you ever do watch it with Samantha and I, you'll be familiar them.

This is Dora (Or "Door-Door")

This is Dora's Backpack (Or "Back Back")

This is Dora's Map (Or "Mapmap")

This is Swiper the Fox. He likes to steal things away from Dora and her friends. In order to keep him away from stealing things from you, you need to say "Swiper No Swiping" 3 times fast and Swiper will stop. Right after he's been caught Swiper always says "Oh Man!" (Or "Ohhhh Meeeeeeee")

It was nice talking to you. I'll be Mommy's guest blogger from time to time.

Guilty...Is How I Feel

It all started last Wednesday afternoon at 3:15 pm. I had to make the highly anticipated phone call that I'd been waiting to make since August: will I be serving jury duty or not? After being told by the gruff sounding man on the automated answering machine that "all jurors that are scheduled for Jury Duty on Thursday, November 18, 2010 are to report as scheduled to Lynn District Court at 8:00am". I believe my exact words were something along the lines of "Oh, great". So the next two phone calls I made were to Jeremy and my Mom to let them know that I would be serving. I also believe my exact words were, "I'm sure they won't pick me and I'll just wait around for a couple of hours and they'll dismiss us at10:30 and I'll be home".

Boy was I wrong.

So, bright and early Thursday morning, I woke up at 5:00 am to squeeze a Wii jog and a Wii workout in. I responded to a few emails that I knew I needed to get back to, and ate a quick bowl of cereal and was out the door at 6:30am sharp. I stopped to fill up my gas tank and I thought about stopping by the ATM really quick to grab some cash (I never carry any on me) and then I figured that every place accepts cash right?

Boy was I wrong.

So, I turned on my GPS and plugged in Lynn District Court House, and was on my merry way. I was surprised at the lack of traffic (not that I was complaining) so I arrived at the courthouse at about 7:35. I followed the directions to the public parking place on Andrew Street. OK, so far so good. I park my car made sure all of my lights were off, and made sure I had my magazine and my water bottle and my keys. Check. Check. Check. I was so wrapped up in my thoughts that I didn't notice this man come up to the side of my car. He asked if I was there for jury duty and so we walked over to the courthouse together.

My jolly new friend then pointed out that there was a parking attendant in the booth at the entrance and that parking was $5.00. So, as I approached the booth I had to laugh again because the booth for the parking attendant had a sliding door which was cracked open a little bit. It took me a few seconds to realize that there was a pair of eyes peering at me with a scowl through the crack...a little creepy if you ask me. I tried to ignore the creepy factor and figured that enough people have walked away without paying the attendant so he maybe he thought that I would do the same. So, I tried to be friendly by saying "Good morning" and all he grumbled was,

"Five dollars please!" So I started to pull out my trusty debit card, to which the attendant grumbled again

"I don't accept plastic. There's a bank ATM over across the street".

Great.

So, my jolly friend who offered to walk with me to the court house said, "I'll save you the trouble, here's five dollars. Consider this an early Christmas gift".

Then we were instructed to go down to the basement (which was more creepy than the parking garage attendant) and checked in. I was known as "Juror number 15" for the next "few hours".

Boy was I wrong.

To condense a little of my day, the "few hours" turned into 3 1/2 hours. I never have time to myself most days, maybe 1 1/2 hours when the Madore-ables are down for their naps, but seriously I thought, what am I going to do with 3 1/2 hours? I will tell you, it was the best 3 1/2 hours I've spent by myself in a long time.

  1. I re-organized my wallet and made a pile of the receipts that I needed to keep and ripped up any receipts that I didn't need (into teeny tiny pieces). I will also add that I did not drop any pieces as I walked over to the recycling bin to throw them in.
  2. I then read every issue of Good Housekeeping, Better Homes and Gardens, and several other "Mom" magazines from August 2010 until October 2010. So I feel that I'm quite updated on "The top 5 diets" and "The 20 best crock pot recipes for you and your family" and also made a list of websites that I saw in all of these magazines that I saw and would benefit from. (http://www.ziplist.com/, http://www.christmas.organizehome.com/, http://www.thegifttionary.com/, http://www.thefatwallet.com/, http://www.thegrocerygame.com/).
  3. I then created a menu of things we'll be serving for Sarah's birthday party in a few weekends.
  4. I gave myself a "manicure" minus the nail polish.
  5. I wrote down a list of Christmas presents that I would love to buy if money wasn't an object.
  6. I wrote down a list of Christmas presents that I would love to buy on our tight budget.
  7. I wrote out this coming week's schedule with things I need to bake/make.
  8. I took a 3 minute nap...the best nap I've taken in a long time.
  9. I brainstormed about wedding shower ideas for a wedding I'm in next Spring.
  10. I brainstormed about blogging about the day's events.

We were then told by the jury officer that there was going to be a trial. We then directed to the courtroom for jury selection. Completely not what I was expecting. Definitely not a scene from Law & Order at all. Fluorescent lighting, drab curtains and a room just screaming to be on an episode of TLC's "Trading Spaces". But I digress. So, there were about 30 jurors and we were told that only 7 would have to serve on a jury. So, the chances were slim that I wouldn't have to serve, right?

Boy was I wrong.

"Juror number 15? Jennifer Mah-door-ee? Jennifer May-door?" Ugh, I cringe at when my last name is mispronounced. I ignore it and stand and I'm told to go sit in the jury pool. Again, I think I was thinking "Fantastic!" in a sarcastic tone. Finally our little jury of 7 was picked...including the nice jolly man that walked me to the court house that morning. It was then that the judge announced that it was past 1:00 and we were to adjourn for lunch.

On the way over to lunch I was quickly reminded that just because I was chosen for jury duty, did not mean that I had it bad. Have you ever heard the quote, "I cried because I had no shoes until I met a man who had no feet"? Well, it was like a ton of bricks hit me at once because I was no sooner grumbling about the fact that I had to give up my day to serve jury duty when my jury friends and I rounded the corner, we saw a mother sitting on the sidewalk with her back to the wall and her two young children beside her...and the mother had bare feet. Thursday's weather was pretty windy and chilly in Boston, and my heart just broke when I saw that. I felt so horrible for complaining about what was going on in my life that all it took was a second to realize how much I truly had. I saved my potato chips from lunch, but unfortunately when we came back for court after lunch, the mother and her children were gone. I kept thinking about her even when we were adjourned for the day and headed home. I also learned another lesson on the way home too. I was stopped at a red light and couldn't understand why the car in front of me didn't move when the traffic light turned green: a mother and her 2 children were crossing the street to get in line for the food shelter that I had passed. I cried the entire way home.

So, needless to say, my jury duty experience has taught me some valuble lessons:

  1. Be patient, for everyone is fighting a harder battle than I am
  2. Be greatful, for not everyone has what you have
  3. Every experience, no matter how bad is a life lesson.
  4. As my friend Angela recently told me, in the end gives me a greater strength and patience that will see me through life's challenges.

Giving Thanks

My Madore-ables make me so proud. I'm just overwhelmed at times at the level of their comprehension especially at such a young age.

I'm not ashamed to admit it, but Jeremy and I have a strong background of religion and faith. We use it constantly and it's a part of our everyday lives. At each and every meal, no matter where we are, we always pause and give thanks by saying Grace.

Well, the Madore-ables have carried it one step further...

...they also say Grace just before they play "meal time" with their play food.

(I'm sorry about the quality of the pictures, not my best work. You get the general idea)

Five Things Friday

5 Things That Have Made Me Smile In the Last Week

  1. This week has been a nice, quiet week. As much as I miss Sarah's playgroup on Mondays, it's actually nice to not run around. I have had a lot of time to clean around the house and declutter. This week I found out that the library down the street from us has several "story hours" for the girls between now and the end of the year. I took the girls on Tuesday and we had a great time. Samantha is learning what it means to borrow something and return it. Sarah has a blast in the Children's room playing on the colored ABC rug and shouting out the letters in each square.
  2. Less than 1 week to go for Thanksgiving!!!! (Have I mentioned how excited I am?)
  3. I started my transcription job this past week. It took me quite a bit of time, but I finished my first assignment and did a great job. My next goal is to save my money from any transcribing assignments and start saving up for home improvements.
  4. I'm really looking forward to this coming Sunday. Not only do I get to see my friend Sarah, but Sarah's daughter, Gabby turns the BIG 4 the week of Thanksgiving. Miss Gabby has decided to have a girls only birthday party: complete with a lunch date and a day at the salon for Samantha and all of Gabby's friends. I'm so excited for Sam. I'm sure there will be a blog post next week with Samantha's party pictures :)
  5. Yesterday I was summoned for Jury Duty. You're reading this correctly, it's considered #5 on my "Five Things Friday" blog. One of the five things that has made me smile this week. I was a nervous wreck driving into Lynn yesterday morning, but in all honesty? It was a great day yesterday. Unfortunately, I cannot talk about the case because I was selected for the jury and I will be back in court today for closing arguments and until the jury has been deliberated, I can't talk about the court case. BUT I will say again, it was really a great day, and I will have to blog about it more on Sunday.

I Think There's Something Wrong

I think there's something wrong with the Madore-ables.

Nothing too serious...but I am a little concerned.

This doesn't happen too often, but every so often the Madore-ables faces seem to get "stuck" or "frozen".

I have deduced that it only seems to happen when Dora the Explorer or Calliou are on.

Here, take a look. You may be able to help.

*Just a side note, we don't let the Madore-ables watch more than 1 hour of television a day, and even then, it's nothing more than PBS*

99%

I received a really nice compliment from someone recently.
They asked me if my girls are always smiling.
I said 99% of the time, they are laughing and smiling and in a great mood...

Thankfully it's just 1% that the Madore-ables are more like "Grump-ables"

Puzzled

The Madore-ables like love puzzles

Even Sarah has taken a liking to them. She yells out the letters on the alphabet puzzle we have.
Other than Sarah "yelling" out the letters on the pieces, the Madore-ables are quiet when it comes to doing their puzzles.

Sometimes there's the occasional "Mommy, can you help me?"

The rest of the time, it's just pure quietness. You can almost hear the wheels turning.

"I did it Mommy!"

And then we rip it apart and do it all over again.

Oh The Funny Things Kids Will Say

This was a conversation that Sarah and I had this morning:

Me: "Sarah, what does a pirate say?"

Sarah: (without missing a beat) "Beep beep!"

(This causes Samantha to completely lose it and giggle)

Me: "A pirate doesn't say beep beep silly"

Sarah: (gave me a look that just said, "Oh Mommy") and puts on a BIG smile and without missing a beat says, "Arrrrrrrrrrr!" with a very "fierce" face on.

My Madore-ables arrrrrrrrrrrrrr certainly Madore-able!

Do You Know What I Love?

Do you know what I love?

I love looking at The Madore-ables faces...anytime day or night.

Even when they were infants, I would just love to sit and watch them sleep.

Even when I was sleep deprived and exhausted.

Can you see why?

Five Things Friday

5 Things That Have Made Me Smile In the Last Week

  1. Jeremy and I discovered that the Madore-ables like love Dora the Explorer. It's so cute to hear Sarah shout out "MAP" and Samantha sing along with the songs.
  2. I not only cleaned house and donated a lot of unused items in our house through Free Cycle, but I also was able to pick up more clothing for the Madore-ables. Although, a lot of it will go to our nieces and nephews up in Maine, but just the same, it felt GREAT to clean house, give away things to people who want them.
  3. Less than 2 weeks for THANKSGIVING!! Need I say any more? A day of being with family, yummy food and being reminded of what I have to be thankful for in my life.
  4. I had a really good day at work yesterday, very productive. The four hours go by very quickly. I still have a lot to learn, but at the same time I have learned so much already. Plus, I enjoy the people that I work with, and I get to work with my hubby.
  5. Sam continues to do very well sleeping in her big girl bed. In fact, Wednesday night Jeremy and I were watching a movie and we heard footsteps coming down stairs very softly. Samantha announced that she needed to go potty. It looks like Sam is on her way to being out of diapers 100%. (She's been 100% potty trained since she was 20 months, but she only wears diapers for long car rides and when she naps and goes to bed at night).

Cookie Doo?

One of Sarah's favorite books is Eric Carle's "The Very Busy Spider".

It's a great story. It's about a spider who blew in via wind and landed on a fence post near a farm yard. The spider spends the entire story being invited by all the different farm animals to go play, but the hard working spider continues working on building her web to catch a pesty fly.

I was putting the Madore-ables laundry away and cleaning up around the room. While I was doing so, the girls were playing and reading books. Every few seconds, Sarah would randomly shout out "Nay nay" for horse, or "Bah bah" for sheep. The next thing I know Sarah is shouting out "Cookie doo! Cookie doo!" For a second, I was thinking, "What?" Was I hearing "Cookie doo?" or maybe I heard "Coo Coo Ca Chew?" So, I look down at Sarah to find out what she was pointing at, and she gave me the biggest smile and shouted one more time "Cookie doooo!"

"Cookie doo" a.k.a "Cock-a-doodle doo!"
